Parts of this trail are inundated once or twice a year when the Ocmulgee gets out of its banks (when the flow at the Lloyd Shoals flow gauge gets to about 4,500 to 5,000 cfs or higher:
waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?…).
Need to Know
Park at either the Hwy 83 trailhead or the Ocmulgee Flats campground on FS 1099. Avoid if river is high due to flooding.
Description
This is an easy trail but does start off with a good descent/climb from the Hwy 83 trailhead down to the river bank. It's not a technical climb, but might be challenging for beginners due to its roughly 0.5-mile length.
The north end is near the Ocmulgee Flats Campground. For most of its length, this trail has a nice view of the Ocmulgee River with no development on either side - a nice scenic natural section of River. The floodplain along the trail has never been timbered due to difficult access, so there are some very large pines and hardwoods along the route. This area is also home to the Rellict Trillium, a rare/threatened species that blooms on the forest floor in the springtime.
There are two creek crossings (1st Branch and 2nd Branch), but both have wooden footbridges that are normally in service to ride/walk across.
This trail is sometimes used by equestrians but is not muddy or torn up like some other parts of the River Trail north of here. When combined with
White Creek Trail,
Boomerang Trail, and and FS 1099 this section can be a part of a good mixed-terrain loop.
