Overview
This is a great option for a shorter day loop in The Swell. It has a nice mix of views and canyon riding on motorized roads. A mountain bike is recommended because of the sandy and rough surface. Also, make sure to have the track saved as there are many unmarked roads.
Description
This loop has some well maintained road, rocky unmaintained sections, and riding in and thru sandy washes. There are some steep climbs, but mostly climbing is on a reasonable grade. The majority of the sand will be on the downhill sections. Overall it's a great mix of intermediate riding.
Temple Mountain experienced mining of both radium and uranium, and there are many old mines and buildings in this area. You'll also see great views of Temple Mountain and the Swell. This route is also a UTV loop, so if you want solitude it is recommended to stay away from peak visitation times.
The easiest access point is to start and finish at the parking area at the intersection of Temple Mountain Road and Goblin Valley Road.
This loop is best riden clockwise, starting on Temple Mountain Road. You'll travel around the Temple Mountain with good elevation gain in the first half, and a nice descent on the back side. Riding through the reef is a special experience, and this loop is one of the best ways to do it.
History & Background
Mining history is worth reading about before the trip.
