Overview
Mixing up graded county roads, a rougher Jeep road (Aspen Ridge) and seldom used doubletrack, this loop's varying terrain and expansive open spaces makes for enjoyable backcountry riding.
Starting with a sizable climb up to Aspen Ridge, which is appropriately named, you'll find the terrain more demanding than elsewhere on the route. After dropping off the ridge, the route smooths out through Bassam Park, where you can open it up and tick off the miles.
Passing into Herring Park, you'll find solitude and pleasant doubletrack, and finally, one last steep grunt of a climb before a ripping descent down to the CR 175 and CR 185 junction.
Description
The loop is best ridden from Salida, and thereby turned into a lollipop with another ~18 miles and 2,000 ft of climbing tacked on. Bring your gravel bike (if you're a solid rider) or your hardtail mountain bike - those that bring the hardtail can opt for the
Cottonwood singletrack descent into town instead of CR 175.
