Overview
Before you begin you may want to stash some water along the route. There is a dirt road that is somewhat parallel to this singletrack (see the Edge Loop). This same road can be used as a bailout or to shortcut this route.
NOTE: This route is approximately 45 miles long. My GPS lost its signal on the Skywalker Trail thus the the data above is not exact.
Description
Begin at the main 18 Road parking area. Head east across the road to
Vegetarian; left/north on
Down Uppity; right/east on Edge Loop: Cutoff West - this section meanders through scenic grasses and it is true singletrack, about 8" wide; continue on Edge Loop Lipan Canyon. You'll be riding in the wash within the canyon. The wash has fine gravel so try to ride in the existing tracks which is firmer. There is a portage to the left to which takes you out of the canyon to get around to near vertical section.
Shortly after this, you'll begin a steep climb up to the 4WD road. Turn left on the road (the road dead ends to the right). You'll ride/walk this road for a mile or so. There is one section that is very steep - 30% with a loose surface. Keep an eye out for the singletrack trail on the right - it is marked but not named although it may be the first section of
Cloud City.
This trail brings you back to the 4WD trail for a moment. Keep and eye out for the
Cloud City singletrack on the right. Great views, awesome wildflowers (May) and about 4 miles of flow. At the end, you'll intersect a different dirt road, turn right and 100' later see the entrance to
Cicada on the left.
Another four miles of flow with views awaits! At the end, you'll cross the dirt road and connect to Skywalker. Amazing views and simply great singletrack. There is a 100' section of sand halfway through the trail.
Cloud City,
Cicada and Skywalker were opened around 2019.
Head west on
Sarlacc then west on the dirt road to
Lane Mine on the right. Keep an eye out for the abandoned shelter and the remains of a vintage vehicle. Cross the road to
Frontside to
Western Zippity and to
Zip Off.
Are you tough enough?
