Overview

This route is a pioneer-style odyssey through vast grassland, rocky wagon roads, high peaks, deep valleys and everything in between.

Description

Probably some of the toughest "riding" in the Silver City area I bet. This one starts you off nice n' easy at the Dragonfly Trailhead in Fort Bayard. First few miles are nice and fast, flowy, maintained singletrack. Bear left as soon as you get out of the parking lot and follow this singletrack straight-ish til' you see a a lil' corral. Continue left up the last bit of the Fenceline Trail til' it spits you out on Sawmill Wagon Road. This road will be pretty easy as you follow it through the Fort Bayard trail system.

Once you exit Fort Bayard, everything goes to hell. Steep, loose, rocky, and barely rideable at times. BUT it'll get you all the way up to the CDT. Don't be afraid to hike that bike! Once you are at the CDT, stop for a well-deserved snack n' beverage. Then continue on the CDT towards Signal Peak.

You're gonna want to follow the CDT all the way past Signal Peak and Black Peak, through a bit of burn scar, and down to the Lockney Road (Bear Canyon Rd). This is one of the more ride-able sections on this route as of 6/13/22. Once you reach Lockney, hang a right and follow it for a mile or two til' you see a sign and small gate on your left.

That bad Larry is the start of Woodhaul Wagon Road, the crown jewel of this route. Think super loose, chunky, washed-out, barely-there trail for miles at a time. Big downs and a few little ups. Tons of cow trails to get lost on. Keep an eye on your GPS or MTB Project mobile app and you'll be fine. Expect bits of hike-a-bike, or just send it and see. Eventually, it'll get you back to Fort Bayard.

If you are in decent riding shape, I'd say give yourself between 5-7 hours to complete this route. After you're done, go grab a beer at the Toad or something - you've earned it.

A rare Honey-badger sighting. See him riding through old ruts worn into the rock over 100 years ago by soldiers transporting supplies down to the old Fort Bayard.
