Overview
This is a better version of the "Winter Park East" route published on the Headwaters Trails Alliance official Fraser Valley map. That recommends climbing the Buck Creek fire road, but that's pretty dreary. This does most of the climbing on enjoyable singletrack and hits the three most fun descents in the area:
Arrow,
Broken Thumb to
Twisted Ankle to
South Fork Loop (8 mins descent at high speed), and
Burnout Loop which was recently reconstructed as a flow trail.
Description
If you love technical climbing, start by going up
Yankee Doodle Trail instead of
Meadow Trail as this route shows. That is more fun for skilled riders, but not shown here since newbies won't enjoy the technical switchbacks. Enjoy first descent down
Arrow. Couple of aggressive grade reversals here so be ready to downshift.
Loop around on some slightly rockier singletrack and ride past the top of
Arrow to an access road that will take you to the midpoint of
Broken Thumb trail. The section above here is mostly not worth riding -- it is open to motos so tends to be super loose scree.
This route starts you halfway down where you get a nice, fast traverse followed by the longest descent in the area (
Broken Thumb to
Twisted Ankle to
South Fork Loop ). Fantastic riding.
Then, do a quick loop on
Burnout Loop for a final touch of flow, then loop through wetlands, over a bridge, back to where you started.
If you are up for a bit more climbing and descending, you can traverse back towards the start on
Whoops Trail instead of the route shown here.
