Overview

Best bike trail to Apple Pie Hill from Carranza, without going on the restricted BotanaTrail. While slightly longer, it is faster, less bugs, and better biking.

Need to Know

Best parking at Carranza Memorial, there are also out houses at the Botana Campgrounds.

Description

A fun ride on a single-wide sandy road. There are spots with a little deep sand, at worst you can walk around. Apple Pie Hill is 205 ft high, the second highest point in South Jersey. There is fire Tower which might be open to visitors, call 609.726.9010

The trail roughly parallels the now defunct NJ Central Rail Road, which ran between Hammonton and Chadworth, NJ. The bike trail makes a sharp left turn to climb Apple Pie Hill at historic Harris Station.

History & Background

This is the historic land of the Lenape Indians. The first industrial activity was providing wood fuel to run the bog iron furnaces in the area. And later a center for lumbering and saw mills. The trail roughly follows the New Jersey Central Rail Road.
