If you want a quiet easy trail all to yourself, this is it. Unless you are a local, you would probably not know this is back here. This is in the Thompson Harbor State Park. michigantrailmaps.com/membe…
Need to Know
Michigan State park, so need a recreational park pass ($11 per year)
Description
This is a bit of a remote location and don't expect to see too many people. You need to turn off US23 and take some gravel roads for a while to get to the trailhead. From the parking lot, just follow the signs from 1-9 in order. From marker 1-3 it is mostly a gravel path. Between markers 3 and 4 you can get glimpses of Lake Huron and at marker 4 you can see the inlet from Grand Lake to Lake Huron.
From there you kind of backtrack to marker 2 before heading out to marker 5. Here you have the option to take a short cut back to 1 or continue to marker 6. Now you'll start getting into some single tracks. At marker 6 you start to get some real good views of Lake Huron.
There is a rocky beach area around this point, but as you continue on you can see some sandy beaches too. Eventually you'll end up at marker 9 and need to make a left along the road to get back to the starting point. We were out there in the fall on a weekend and absolutely no one else around.
