BLM-maintained road passes through a private ranch on NE side. Please be respectful as you cross the ranch and watch for the ranch dogs.
Overview
The Socorro BFL is a challenging gravel loop. The Quebradas Scenic Byway offers a rugged high desert landscape, and the BFL builds upon this by adding a loop with Johnson Hill Rd. extending out to La Cebolla. The NE portion of the loop gets into the juniper pinion forest, which provides a nice complement to the more rugged high desert segments.
Description
This gravel bike route starts at the Escondida Bridge Park by the Rio Grande. You leave the Bosque and proceed up Johnson Hill Rd past the OHV area. The road winds through the high desert terrain towards La Cebolla mesa in the distance. As the route turns south the scenery changes to more juniper forest, before returning to high desert landscape. You complete the route using the Quebradas Scenib Byway and return to Escondida Bridge Park.
The roads in the area are only infrequently maintained. They can be both rocky on the steeper climbs and descents and sandy in sections following arroyos. A gravel bike with 40mm tires is the minimum recommended, and an XC bike with 2"+ tires may be preferred.
