Overview
Link up these different trails to ride the green/blue outer loop of this system. The climbs are steady with a mellow grade overall, the views and plant life are unbelievable, and the downhills are fast and fun.
Need to Know
On most days you'll see very few or no other riders. Come prepared.
Description
Start and finish in the cute little town of Blue Diamond, where you'll park next to a bike shop, grocery store, and town park with restrooms. This outer loop will hit all of the cross-country highlights of the system with easy miles and tons of scenery.
You'll see all of the plant life varieties in the area and maybe even some rare desert wildlife, including mules and/or desert tortoises. The fast descent coming back toward Blue Diamond is highlighted by trails called
3 Mile Smile and
Cactus Slalom. There will be easy climbs with nothing technical and fast descents with plenty of flow. Plan for this ride to take around 3 or 4 hours.
There are a few variations if you're looking to add more miles and several options if you're looking to shorten this loop.
History & Background
Part of this loop will follow the historic
Old Spanish Trail. A major route of mule pack trains across the southwest between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Los Angeles, California. New Mexican traders moved locally produced merchandise across what are now six states, including New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and California.
