Winter closure for bikes on this BLM route is Dec. 1 through April 15.
One Way Only: This is designated as a directional trail.
Overview
The full Crown Royale trail provides an engaging, fast, feature-filled, flowy, directional down-only experience on The Crown, linking the top of the mountain down to (just shy of) the paved path that links up many of the trail systems in the Roaring Fork Valley, the
Rio Grande Trail. Much of this professionally built flow trail is blue and intermediate friendly, especially the Upper and Middle segments. BUT, you'll encounter very easy potential for high speeds, you'll encounter many jump features at speed, and you'll need to negotiate many fast berms. Your expert level riding skills will pay dividends!
Need to Know
Description
From top to bottom, you'll start with big views of nearby Mount Sopris, while dropping through sage fields, oak brush forests, aspen groves, grassy meadows, pinion-juniper stands, and steep walled gulleys. Expect to find berms, rollers, doubles, tables, crossover loops, big and steep wall rides, natural features that will get you up into the air, and plenty of high speed moments along the way.
It's fair to say you'll find plenty of intermediate segments, and even have to pedal for a few short moments. Turn up the speed when the coast is clear ahead, but watch out for those bigger advanced features that demand skills and experience on the bike.
Towards the bottom of the trail, on Lower Crown Royale, look out for the three Crossover Loops. Be sure to space out riders at least 10 seconds. Rider in the Crossover Loop has right of way over riders not yet in the loop!
Lower Crown Royale includes a fairly steep and narrow gully that includes wall riding trail alignment that flows up and down the steep walls of the gully; momentum is your friend on this roller coaster portion of trail. Use caution as some riders find the speed required to whoop down and back up the side walls a bit daunting.
