Description
Welcome to Burning Mountain! When riding the full loop of trails (still under construction as of Aug. 2023) west of New Castle, CO, Talbott's Burning Mountain Trail will be your entry point, and the trail you'll spend plenty of time on while ascending the steep north slopes of this impressive geological formation. You'll find plenty of generous climbing turns, and even a few flat and downhill reliefs, but mostly you'll be gaining serious elevation on your way up to high point with views of the Colorado River, the Flat Tops, the immediate surroundings of New Castle way down below, and the mountains and valleys towards Glenwood Springs, Silt, and beyond.
Find the start of the trail just to the west of the entry driveway for Elk Creek Elementary School. You can park near the entry driveway, or if school is in session and parking is limited, please park near downtown New Castle and grab a bite or a drink after your ride. This trail tops out at a great view point area next to a tall cairn of rocks.
This trail has a generous wide machine cut bench, allowing easy passes with two-way traffic, and is the easiest portion of the soon to be completed loop on Burning Mountain (the mid ridge, south descent, and south return will have narrower, and sometimes steeper, hand built tread. Consider this trail a great out-and-back experience for the climb, excellent views, and long descent back down to town..
