Probably will not ride well in the winter
Overview
The Quartz Hill trail system is in the Cibola National Forest SW of Grants, NM. Take the well maintained Zuni Canyon road to find the trailhead parking. The parking area is a loop around a few very large trees. The trail system consists of at least one trail west of Zuni Canyon Rd and numerous trails on the east side of the road. The route presented here represents a ride on the outermost extents of the trail system.
Need to Know
Park where the "P" on the map is. The parking lot is a loop near some large Ponderosa trees.
Description
The trail on the west side the road is your typical forested singletrack through fantastic Ponderosa Pine. The trails found east of the road seem to have been cut-in with some sort of mechanized equipment as they are consistently 3 feet wide. There are no trails out here of severe difficulty.
As one rides further east from the road, there are a few intersections of other trails that make navigating a bit confusing. A bit of exploring on these offshoots has always led back to this loop. Once you ride east of the very obvious volcano, there is only one obvious bike trail to follow. Settle in for about 10 miles of awesome cross county pedaling.
History & Background
This area was heavily logged in the 1880s and early 1900s. The resulting forest, 120 years later is amazingly beautiful.
