Overview
Beginning at Reyes Peak, this is a long descent, with few if any places to really stop and rest. A perfect trail for those who are searching for a true enduro / trail bike test. Sustained, flowy if fast, and beautiful. Enjoy a multitude of riding surfaces from grippy sandstone to meadows to switchbacks and pine forests.
Description
Chorro Grande offers an easier alternative to
Big Boulder Trail, and being slightly less steep makes it climbable as an out and back. Otherwise, you could ride a big loop or run a partial shuttle with Highway 33 and Pine Mountain Ridge Road.
If beginning at the lower trailhead, gear up for a long and sustained climb. The setting will gradually shift from tacky sandstone to wildflower and oak laden meadows within the first 2 miles, all at a reasonable grade. After that, it pitches into switchbacks among chaparral followed by pine forest. There is a natural spring at mile 4 that's otherwordly in its serene nature. At the summit, turn around for a hoot of a ride back down to the car!
History & Background
The trail was built in the 1960s as a mining route; however mortar bowls in rocks suggest it is of older, indigenous origin. There is a historic campsite by the natural spring high along the trail.
