Overview
A classic loop up a beautiful, relatively easy trail with water troughs and historical provenance, then down a sustained 4,000 foot descent.
Description
Beginning in the Pratt parking lot near town, ride across shelf road to Gridley. Climb Gridley trail to Nordhoff Ridge - a relatively technically easy if not strenuously long endeavor.
From the summit, head west toward the old fire tower. From here it is all downhill - first along doubletrack, then a hard left sends you down Upper Pratt Trail. Take this somewhat rocky but overall doable trail until it terminates at a fire road with a bench.
Here, turn left (east) and cruise down doubletrack and past the iron USFS gate to pavement. Just past where the pavement starts, the trail picks up again on the left. This rocky singletrack will lead straight back to the car.
History & Background
Gridley is a trail built in the early 1900s by an oil baron to bring water down to his orange grove. it was improved to the ridge alone with Pratt by the USFS for the fire tower.
