Overview
This is a large lollipop loop that combines about a dozen different Hawes trails. This loop has it all. Mellow fence line warm up, flowy singletrack, technical climbing, fast descents, and a decent sampling of the different trails at Hawes.
Need to Know
Parking is no longer allowed at the Walgreens. You'll need to find parking in the commercial spaces surrounding it.
Description
Start off at the Walgreens at Power and E. Eagle Crest Dr. Cross the street and take
Fenceline Trail north along the housing development. This trail is super easy and a great chance to warm up the legs. This will intersect with
Hawes Trail, which you'll hop on and head east. Again, this one is mellow with less than 100' elevation increase. From here you'll head north on
Cactus Gardens.
This is a black diamond and you'll be riding it as an uphill, with about 300' elevation gain. After this continue north on Upper Gidro, again taking this trail in the uphill direction, with about 150 feet elevation gain. From here the real fun begins! You'll take a left and head in the northwest direction on Red Mountain Rush. This is 2.5 miles of twisty, turny downhill excitement, with about 1100 foot elevation drop. A higher travel bike will soak up the bumps and washboard sections, but I did this just fine on a 120mm travel downcountry bike.
At the completion of RMR, you'll be at the northern end of Hawes near Bush Highway. Hop onto
Wild Horse Trail and head west for some mellow downhill. Wild Horse will take you to
Twisted Sister for a very short duration before heading southwest on
Riverview. I found this trail to be enjoyable, with lots of twists and turns and plenty of ups and downs. Ultimately you are losing elevation here with a 270' drop.
After
Riverview you'll head on
Saguaro Trail southwest for the tail end of that. It's rated a black diamond and the portion you'll ride is downhill. Next up is
Granite Trail #54, which is an easy, open trail that connects Bush Hwy to
Ridge Trail #59. This one will be a gradual uphill ride as you head south. From
Granite hop onto
Ridge Trail #59. While good in either direction, you'll be taking it northwest before it drops south with a fun downhill section that can be fun to bomb.
As your ride starts to wind down, take Ridge to
Hawes Pig Trail. This one has a slight descent before starting a gradual climb. It's a mix of smooth singletrack with some rocky exposed sections. From Pig Trailhead south on
Lower Hawes, the lower section of the man
Hawes Trail. It a great, mellow section with good flow and is relatively flat.
Lower Hawes will take you right back to
Fenceline Trail, which you'll take south back to the car!
