Start and end back in Lyons for this awesome 12-mile loop that links up all the rideable trails at
Hall Ranch. This takes you up the easiest way, around the loop at the top for some great views, then return on the more technical descent.
There are many variations to riding the trails at
Hall Ranch. But if you want the most bang for your buck while hitting every rideable trail, this is your best bet.
Head out of town and cruise up the road to the trailhead. It may seem like a lame start to a ride, but it's an excellent way to warm up your legs for the climbing to come. Once you hit the trailhead, the climb steepens along the
Antelope Trail. However, it's an excellent trail that clearly had some thought put into it. There are a few rocky and steep spots and one questionable switchback. Climb to the first junction and take a right to cruise along the
Bitterbrush - Upper Section. The grade is a bit mellower now, and those steep spikes feel much more manageable.
Once you get to the junction with
Nelson Loop, keep going. It's tempting to take a break here, but with more climbing to do, your legs will thank you for keeping the pace. Though you can travel this loop in either direction, it is unquestionably a better ride when done clockwise. Once you get to the overlook, then you can take a quick break. The views are lovely!
From here, drop your seat and get ready for some flowy goodness down the backside. Coming back into the junction at the start of the loop, slow down for oncoming traffic, then continue zipping your way down
Bitterbrush - Upper Section until you find yourself back at the first junction.
Take a right again to stay on
Bitterbrush - Lower Section. There is a very short climb here and don't let it lull you into a false sense of security. The descent along this section is fun, rocky, and technical. There is always a line, but sometimes it takes a second look. There are a few tight spots, and remember, uphill traffic has the right of way, so plan ahead and don't be miffed when a climber pops out from around a blind corner. Remember, you're having a blast—they're climbing this nonsense. Once you near the bottom, the trail mellows out, and it's no time before you're back on the road and cruising back into town to end your ride.
