Need to Know
If riding here in warmer seasons, bring more water than you think you could need
Trail is not very well signed. You'll need navigation skills and a sense of exploration.
Description
Access from the main gate on highway 550 requires a combination code which can be obtained from the BLM Rio Puerco Field office by calling (505) 761-8700. From here you can drive to the main area or you can start from the entrance by taking
Red Line Ridge.
Usually ridden clockwise, the trail starts at the main parking lot, climbs south, up the access road where it crosses a metal roll-over gate. Following a doubletrack, there is a steep descent. The trail goes north up a very, very rugged, rocky canyon. At the top you'll cross another metal gate, and then proceed downhill. At the bottom the trail enters a vast rocky maze of eroded arroyos. Pick your way through as best you can heading north, following a deep arroyo on your left until the trail meets the Jemez Pueblo gate boundary. Turn right (east) along a variety of interesting features. If there has been recent rain or snow, you'll see pools of water, called "tinajas". At the far eastern end, the trail turns right (south) and follows another steep picturesque arroyo known as "the Little Grand Canyon". Toward the bottom it follows a well defined singletrack before turning right (east) across loose shale. It turns right again (north) and meets the central rocky arroyo, back to the main parking area.
This area has been the home of the New Mexico Trails Association for many years. Trails moto-bikes are unique and lightweight, with no seats! They use this area for practice and competitions.
