Description
This is the actual [unpaved] trail section of the '
El Sereno Up and Back' recommended route here on MTB Project.
Ridden in this direction, the Aquinas
Trail actually starts at a T junction after a short section of the Montevina
Trail which is the continuation of the paved Montevina Rd (note there is no parking at this trailhead, the closest parking would at the junction with Black Rd opposite the Lexington Reservoir).
The trail surface is wide and in good condition all the way down (with only the odd rough/rocky spot and some water run-off damage) - and affords wonderful views over the surrounding area.
However, there are some steeper sections in places, and for many I suspect would be a relentless grind to ride uphill, particularly in hotter weather as there is little shade other than the last mile or so towards the bottom.
If you're after a serious workout, by all means park/start in Los Gatos and ride this route as an out and back - you certainly will have 'earned your downhill' as the saying goes... However, personally I would suggest you ride this trail in the direction shown as part of a longer loop - for example: climb up the paved Montevina Rd, and after the long descent from El Sereno into downtown Las Gatos, incorporate the southernmost part of the
Los Gatos Creek Trail as your return.
