Description
This a crushed rock surface bike path with fantastic access through the south side of Rocky Mountain Arsenal wildlife preserve. Now open to bikes, a east to west direction frames the prairie views and cottonwoods against great arcs of the Front Range. It also gets you off the paved south segment of the
Perimeter Trail along 56th Ave.
Starting at the parking at Chambers Rd and 56th Ave, head west through the wildlife gate. From there the trail winds along an old canal under partial shade of ancient cottonwoods. It turns paved for a short section to allow ADA access to the Rod and Gun Ponds, the turns due west to gravel again, south of Lake Ladora, crosses a small paved road, over a small hill and down to the visitor center. Make sure to stop in there to see the history of the weapons manufacture era at the arsenal, and see the black footed ferret breeding program and wildlife exhibits.
You can reverse back to your car here or continue east on the trail for just a little bit and join the
Perimeter Trail here to go around the other 3 sides of the arsenal outside the fence and back to your car.
