Overview
This 16-mile out-and-back trail offers slightly easier riding than the nearby Gooseberry Mesa and provides amazing views of Pastry Ridge, Flying Monkey Mesa, and the distant Zion National Park. Still an intermediate trail, it traverses the edge of Gooseberry Mesa and is composed of mostly fun dirt singletrack with a sprinkle of technical rock features and sometimes loose quartzite pebbles.
Need to Know
There is no pit toilet at this trailhead, but nearby Gooseberry Trailhead has one.
Description
Park at the Windmill trailhead and start pedaling north past the large windmill. Once you reach the rim, go right following a singletrack that meanders along the edge of Gooseberry Mesa.
The trail becomes faint as you cross the Gooseberry Yurts but quickly picks up again once reaching the mesa's edge. The trail remains prominent as you traverse the edge. Expect small rock rollers and loose pebbles for the rest of the ride.
Keep an eye out for the iconic Pastry Ridge, a multicolored spine resembling that of a colorful pastry in the valley bellow. Follow this trail for a total of 8 miles before reaching the top of the
Grafton Wash trail. Marked by an intersection with a dirt road. This is a good place to turn around before descending into the ravine below.
If you want to make this route a loop, you can exit onto a nearby dirt road that takes you to Gooseberry Mesa road. This offers a gentler way to finish the day.
