Overview

The Red Mesa Trail System provides fun, safe, and well maintained trails for anyone to enjoy. Soak in the views as you ride along the Red Mesa and its unique terrain. There is a lot to experience here and there's not many places like it. The downhill sections are exciting and the sandstone offers pretty good grip.

Need to Know

Has free parking with restrooms. All trails are marked with signs, painted diamonds/rectangles, and cairns. Don't go off trail. Be very careful of heat, there is little to no shade. Watch for other hikers, it is not just a biking trail.

Description

Red Mesa Tour is made up of 8 different trails and creates a full loop. Going clockwise is likely the better option but counter-clockwise is possible.

Start with Red Mesa Loop and soak in the views as you traverse the rim of the mesa. The terrain is mostly flat with a few rock features. Continue along the trail until you reach the start of Northern Runway Loop.

Drop in and experience your first thrills on the short but steep sandstone slickrock. At the bottom of the gulley take a couple photos and continue right along the base of the mesa following the trail until you reach a junction. Go left and hop on Hives & Hoodoos.

Ride along the wavy sandstone until you reach two small sandstone hills. Go to the right where the trail splits and do a small but fun downhill section. As you continue along the trail there will be a short but very steep climb. After you reach the top there will be a small sandstone spire, go to the right of the spire and continue on for a ways. Start the leg burning climb to the top of the mesa and join up with Fin Rock Ledge.

Check out the red desert landscape as you ride along the cliffside. The trail goes along the base of these sandstone fins that jut out over the cliffside. You'll feel the exposure as you navigate the technical rocky sections. Continue going straight to join up with Eastern Ledge.

Keep riding along the steep cliffside until you reach Cuddy Corner. This is a fun alt line the goes off to the left and down some slickrock coast along the sandstone and make a big climb back onto the main trail. Follow the packed dirt singletrack and continue to soak in the gorgeous views. Go up a switchback and then continue until you reach Mushroom Rock Loop.

The fun immediately begins as you coast down a steep downhill section and towards the bottom of the mesa. You'll pick up quite a bit of speed. As you reach the bottom the trail will meander a bit and there will be a few sandy sections. The trail will loop back around and you'll begin to climb up the side of the mesa. The trail will get a bit thin to keep things exciting. After the climb another super fun downhill section will begin. Coast along and enjoy the last bit of downhill. The end of the trail will meetup with Sandy Bailout Loop.

Follow this until you reach a wooden bridge and go left connecting back with Red Mesa Loop. Enjoy the last little bit of the landscape as you ride along the edge of the mesa. The trail will then turn back towards the parking lot.

Finish up with a quick low angle downhill and you'll be back at the parking lot.
