Need to Know

There is a parking lot at the bottom of the Maud-S trail systems, access is very close to the Continental Drive Exit of I-90. Exit to the east and head left on Saddle Rock Road and the Parking Lot is about a quarter mile on the right.

Description

This trail provides a link between the lower Maud-S Loop with the top of the East Ridge and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). It can also be used to access Butte's iconic statue, Our Lady of the Rockies via Our Lady Trail. The best part of the trail is the great views you'll have almost the entire way.

Due to its steepness, this trail is one of the best downhill trails in the Butte area, fast lines, interesting rocks and tight switchbacks. Unfortunately there is no easy way to get to the top, and climbing up this trail is a brutal endeavour with most riders needing to take rests or walk sections. This can be made worse after heavy rain due to ruts and loose rocks. The bottom of the trail is accessed by riding up Maud-S Loop, which is a good initial test - if you are struggling going up the loop trail, you'll find it even more difficult on the upper trail.

An alternative to climbing up this trail is to access the top via the CDT from Homestake Pass. This can be done either as a loop going up the old railway, or as a shuttle. While longer in distance, this alternative access to the top is less "gut-busting" and avoids having to ride up and down the same trail.
