Overview

This route takes riders through beautiful pine forests above the Hermosa valley just north of Durango, CO. There are moderate climbs on both fire road and singletrack, taking you further into the forest. This trail makes you truly feel like you are away from civilization while still having the safety of phone service.

Description

Start this ride at the base of Missionary Ridge Road. The climb up Missionary Ridge Road is moderate as you follow a series of switchbacks. Watch out for cars coming up and down this road as it is quite popular, especially in the summer time. You'll pass a few houses and then go through the first gate to continue up the road. After a bit of the climb you'll come to another gate right after a large left hand sweeping corner. Pass through this gate as well and continue up the road. This is where the views get really good! You can see all the way to Engineer Mountain! After a handful more switchbacks, come to the third gate near a camping area. This is where you'll turn and find the Red Rim trail. This trail has no signage, so make sure to follow the gps tracks the best you can. Once you are on the trail it is well visible.
The Red Rim trail takes riders through lush meadows, beautiful aspen groves, and tall pines. It is a moderate climb with the beginning having some punchy steep climbs. You'll climb this trail until you reach the intersection with Stevens Creek Trail #728. The Stevens Creek Trail #728 descent is a really fun one! The top is more moderate and traverses across the landscape. Enjoy gorgeous views of the cliffs across the valley and mountains. It is a moderately fast descent where you can find some nice flow. The bottom of Stevens Creek Trail #728, what often gets ridden more, is fast, rocky, with some fun jumps in the beginning.
After completing the Stevens Creek Trail #728 riders will pop out on the highway. Pedal the short distance back to your vehicle.
