Need to Know
The Pipestone region east of Butte and west of Whitehall is primarily a motorized recreation area managed by both BLM and the USFS. While officially there is non-motorized singletrack, the reality is that dirt bikes will ride every trail here, including making their own. Mountain Biking can still be a rewarding activity here, especially in the early spring and late fall when other areas have snow cover. The network and variety of trails is vast, so it is best to bring GPS, a riding plan, and plenty of gear for mechanicals and body refueling. There are many trails that are sandy, rocky and steep, so riding times may be longer than you expect, and the trails at lower elevations generally have few trees so expect to have little shade.
Description
BLM 16 is a very typical doubletrack in the Pipestone Area - steep, sandy and rocky. All of it is generally rideable, but depending on how strong you are feeling on the day there might be sections that have you off the bike on the uphills. Trail is most easily ridden from west to east as it is mostly downhill, however there are several steep uphills to interrupt your flow.
This trail ties in with a lot of popular trails at the Southeastern corner of Pipestone, such as
BLM #20 (most popular with dirt bikes),
Dry Creek (most popular with Mountain Bikers), and
BLM #1 (Popular with both).
Near the western end it crosses Delmoe Lake Rd where there is a trailhead (no facilities other than a map), and at it's eastern end it comes out directly at the Main Lower Pipestone Trailhead where there are bathrooms.
