Need to Know
The Pipestone region east of Butte and west of Whitehall is primarily a motorized recreation area managed by both BLM and the USFS. While officially there is non-motorized singletrack, the reality is that dirt bikes will ride every trail here, including making their own. Mountain Biking can still be a rewarding activity here, especially in the early spring and late fall when other areas have snow cover. The network and variety of trails is vast, so it is best to bring GPS, a riding plan, and plenty of gear for mechanicals and body refueling. There are many trails that are sandy, rocky and steep, so riding times may be longer than you expect, and the trails at lower elevations generally have few trees so expect to have little shade.
Description
This short but fun piece of non-motorized singletrack is worth riding because it's one of the few in the Pipestone area that feels more like a mountain bike trail rather than a dirt bike trail. It packs in a little bit of everything you can hope for from a Pipestone singletrack - some tight turns and some flow, both steep and mellow sections, some sandy and some rocky sections
Although the trail is mostly rideable as an uphill, most will prefer to ride it as a downhill. There is a steep washed out section about 2/3 of the way down that some riders may have trouble with in either direction depending on conditions.
A short fun loop can be made with this trail by riding up either BML #13, or a combination of Delmoe Lake Rd and BLM#14. Both this trail and
BLM #13 end at the Railroad Parking Lot where there is no facilities other than a map.
