Need to Know

The Pipestone region east of Butte and west of Whitehall is primarily a motorized recreation area managed by both BLM and the USFS. While officially there is non-motorized singletrack, the reality is that dirt bikes will ride every trail here, including making their own. Mountain Biking can still be a rewarding activity here, especially in the early spring and late fall when other areas have snow cover. The network and variety of trails is vast, so it is best to bring GPS, a riding plan, and plenty of gear for mechanicals and body refueling. There are many trails that are sandy, rocky and steep, so riding times may be longer than you expect, and the trails at lower elevations generally have few trees so expect to have little shade.

There are many official trailheads in the area, many along the main Lake Delmoe Rd, and most of these trailheads have a bathroom. You can also park just off the side of the road or trail, and this is possible in many locations.

Description

This trail is primarily ridden by dirtbikes and is very steep and challenging. There is a lot of rock slab which help to make it both rideable and fun on a mountain bike. The part that will put many riders off is that fact that it goes into and out of a gully, which means that there will be some uphill (and likely some bike pushing) no matter which way you ride it. The best direction to ride this is from West to East, as you'll have the most downhill this way, but unfortunately you'll also have to push your bike up the steepest section of trail to get out of the gully.

There are two alternative lines that are slightly easier on either side of the gully. If you are going from West to East, the 2nd alternative line going up the other side of the gully is recommended.

Although signposted at Halfway Creek Rd, the trail ends are not necessarily obvious, so GPS is recommended. Halfway Creek Rd is the easiest way to access this trail, just remember this "road" is steep and loose in places. Trail ends at Suicide Cabin ATV trail which is relatively pleasant. There is a parking area at the bottom of Halfway Creek Rd.
