Need to Know

There is a primitive parking area 3 miles up from MT-1 on an unnamed gravel road. Road is suitable for SUV's.

Description

This trail brings you to the larger of the two Barker Lakes, magnificent alpine lakes surrounded by 10,000ft high mountains. The lakes themselves are almost at 8,000ft, which means that this is primarily a summer time activity, and because the trail is south facing it takes a while to become snow free in the spring. There is no trail to the smaller lake and requires off-trail navigation and hiking to get there.

Much of the trail follows an old non-motorized doubletrack. It starts off smooth and easy, and gradually transitions to a moderate gradient with some rocks.

The last mile of this trail is singletrack and is solely responsible for the difficult rating. Less confident riders may choose to leave their bikes and hike this section. It is steep with rock gardens, and even the strongest riders can expect some small sections of hike-a-bike on the way up. The descent is completely rideable and will be challenging (but hopefully fun) for confident riders.
