Overview
Get ready for a fast and flowy adventure on Trail #4, one of Boise's best-kept secrets for downhill fun! This 8-mile descent is like a rollercoaster built for mountain bikes, complete with rocky sections, steep rock-gardens, and enough loose sandy sections to keep things interesting.
Starting from Ridge Road, Trail #4 wastes no time getting your adrenaline pumping. It's a black diamond for a reason, with fast turns, technical sections, and so many whoops, you'll be grinning from ear to ear as you double through them. The trail is a dirt bike route by design, but it's become a favorite for mountain bikers who crave a wild ride. It's fast, it's flowy, and it's the kind of trail that'll leave you wanting to hit it again and again.
Description
Trail #4 is the downhill adventure you've got to experience at least once. It's steep, it's rocky, it's loose, and it's got more rollers than a motocross track—thanks to the dirt bikes that rip through here. Yep, this is a dirt bike trail, but mountain bikers have claimed it as the ultimate descent from the Ridge Road to Camel's Back Park. If you're looking for the biggest descent from ridge to city, this is it!
Let's be real—unless you're a glutton for punishment, this is a shuttle route. Climbing 3,300 feet just to get to the top? No, thank you! So, save your energy for the fun part: the downhill.
Starting on the Ridge Road, you'll jump onto Trail #4 and stick with it all the way down. This trail's got a fierce personality, so keep your eyes on the trail as you tackle its steep, rocky, and loose sections. You'll pass Femrites Trail and
Fat Tire Traverse—just keep right at each junction. While the trail signs are clear, they can be easy to miss if you're flying down the trail, so remember to stay right if you're not stopping to check. Trail #4 is the kind of ride that'll have you grinning and gripping your handlebars with equal intensity.
As you tackle the short climb from
Fat Tire Traverse to the Trail #4 and
Sidewinder connector, keep in mind that Lower Hulls Gulch is a directional trail with rotating days. Make sure it's a designated descent day before reaching that gate—trust me, you don't want to be the one barreling downhill when it's an uphill-only day. Once you've confirmed it's all clear, enjoy the smooth flow of Lower Hulls on your way down. If you didn't check the calendar, no worries—
Sidewinder makes for a great alternative descent at this junction.
After Hulls, it's time to cross 8th Street and hop onto Chickadee Ridge. This part of the ride is a nice little change of pace as you work your way back to Camel's Back Park. It's a great cool-down stretch, with just enough trail to keep things interesting without making you work too hard. Before you know it, you'll be rolling back into Camel's Back, grinning from ear to ear, and already planning your next run down Trail #4.
