Description
This nice piece of trail is part of the Continental Divide Trail Route, however unlike many of the surrounding trails, it is singletrack. The trail is open to dirt bikes, but doesn't seem to be affected much by trail damage, and dirt bikers usually do a great job of keeping the trail clear of deadfall. This section of CDT doesn't see nearly as many non-motorized users as the trails closer to Butte.
This trail is rideable in either direction, but is most easily accessed from the eastern side via Divide Creek Ridge or Bull Ranch Road and Trail, either as an out and back or part of a big loop. The trail starts off the doubletrack where there is a trail sign and a wooden barrier to bar access to ATV's. Despite this, it can be easy to ride past if you're not paying attention.
The lower part of the trail is the most interesting riding with some tight switchbacks, small stream crossings and some mild technical features. The upper part of the trail is more scenic as the trail is less featured but traverses across the side of Burnt Mountain with views towards the south. Overall the trail has a moderate gradient with nothing "super steep" or "gut-busting".
The trail ends at the top by joining back up with doubletrack, and just a few hundred feet further you'll reach a great viewpoint looking out from the side of Burnt Mountain towards the north.
