Overview

This loop is a short fun introduction to riding in the Pipestone Area and starts nice and close to the highway. Included in this loop are doubletrack, dirt road and two sections of singletrack - Easter Lily and Washout. The loop can be ridden in either direction, but counter clockwise is recommended due to this direction being easier on Easter Lily.

Need to Know

The Pipestone region east of Butte and west of Whitehall is primarily a motorized recreation area managed by both BLM and the USFS. While officially there is non-motorized singletrack, the reality is that dirt bikes will ride every trail here, including making their own. Mountain Biking can still be a rewarding activity here, especially in the early spring and late fall when other areas have snow cover. The network and variety of trails is vast, so it is best to bring GPS, a riding plan, and plenty of gear for mechanicals and body refueling. There are many trails that are sandy, rocky and steep, so riding times may be longer than you expect, and the trails at lower elevations generally have few trees so expect to have little shade.

Description

From the Traihead, take the ATV trail BLM #1 North up the hill and East beside the old railroad track. This trail has some fun and steep little ups and downs and will spit you out onto the Ringing Rocks Access Road. Turn left on the Ringing Rocks Access Rd, and then at the first bend, go straight to follow the ATV trail BLM #3.

On BLM #3 you'll encounter the granite sand of Pipestone, if you haven't already. You ride about a mile on BLM #3, and here it is handy to have GPS as the singletracks are unmarked and it is easy to get confused. Easter Lily starts on the South Side of a fence line near an old water trough. The trail traverses up over a ridge and down through a dry river gully to join back up with the Ringing Rocks Access Rd.

Turn left on the Access Rd, and take the first left on Washout, which starts off as a doubletrack but transitions to singletrack when it starts to get steeper. Washout is similar to Easter Lily in the fact that it climbs up and over the same ridge, and finishes on the other side as a dry gully. It will spit you out back on BLM #3, where you'll be able to follow your tracks back to BLM #1 and the Pipestone Trailhead.

The Washout Trail has a section that is like doubletrack at it's Western end. Photo is looking west and the Access Road is just hidden from view.
