Overview
Montana Tech Open Space feels like a maze of trails if you are unfamiliar with it. Having a nice loop to follow can prevent you from overlapping yourself and help you see more of the park. This course was used for the NICA competition in 2023 and 2024. It has also been used by the local Highlands Cycling Club for their Wednesday Evening Race Nights.
Need to Know
Montana Tech Open Space Park is a non-motorized multi-use trail system. There are two main Parking Areas, one at the top (North) of the park on Orofino Gulch Rd, and one at the Bottom (South) of the park at the end of W Park St. There are no facilities such as bathrooms or water available at the Park.
Description
Course starts beside the pump track near the main lower Tech parking lot. It ascends uphill on the Bike Park Perimeter Trail and connects to the Big Butte Trail which is the main trail that traverses around the "M" Hill where you'll have the best views.
At a signposted fork, you take a left onto
Whisky Gulch, which will provide you with one of the longest continuous downhills in the park. Overall the trail is smooth and flowy with lots of switchbacks on the upper half and undulating curves on the lower half.
Whisky Gulch will spit you out at the bottom of the Park back on the Bike Park Perimeter Trail where you'll take the banked turns back up to the starting point.
