Description

This narrow ATV trail covers an elevation range of just over 2,000 feet between Norton Gulch Trail and part of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). Although it is a motorized trail, it is not super busy and the riding is pleasant. Overall it is relatively smooth with a moderate grade and minimal sand, meaning that it is a great trail for ascending, either as an out and back or part of a large loop.

The bottom of the trail begins with a small bridge about a mile up Norton Gulch Trail. This can be accessed either from the Norton Gulch Trailhead, or via Lone Pine Gulch Road. The trail has some nice views of the Gulch during the initial stages where the trail has some large switchbacks up the hillside. Once you sidle around to the northern slopes of Burnt Mountain you are mostly in dense forest and the views are much more fleeting. The incline of this trail is relatively consistent until about 3/4 of the way up where you come to the only steep and loose section on the trail, where you might have to get off your bike for a bit.

The junction at the top of the Divide with the CDT is marked and obvious, and if you choose to continue there will be some more climbing in both directions, especially heading left (East) where there are some steep switchbacks.

This is what the steepest part of the Ditch Saddle Trail looks like. Not too bad eh?
