Need to Know
Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and Campground is open all year round. Water is available May 1 to September 30. The Park is south facing, and the trails often remain snow free later in the fall, and dry out faster in the Spring compared to other riding areas.
The Park is located on Montana Hwy 2, 15 miles east of Whitehall or 19 miles west of Three Forks.
Description
Cave Gulch trail is an exciting ride from the Cave Visitor Center at the top of the park, to the Campground down the bottom. The trail can be ridden in both directions, however the upper half is steep and primarily ridden downhill. The lower half is ridden uphill, either to connect to
Middle View Trail, or to make a short loop with
DanMor Mine Trail and Fishermans Access.
The top half mile of trail was re-routed around 2022. This section of trail is fast and flowy with bermed corners and is one of the best sections of trail for mountain bikers in the Park. The next half mile follows straight down the bottom of Cave Gulch itself. This section is steep and loose, and is what makes this trail difficult to ascend.
The middle section of trail traverses 1/3 mile around the hill and connects the Danmore Mine Trails with
Middle View Trail. There is a short steep technical section involved in this traverse.
The last mile of trail starts to get into open grassland, and is fast and flowy. This section is probably the easiest and least technical part of Cave Gulch Trail, although there are still some mild technical features and some steep sections.
