Need to Know
Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and Campground is open all year round. Water is available May 1 to September 30. The Park is south facing, and the trails often remain snow free later in the fall, and dry out faster in the Spring compared to other riding areas.
The Park is located on Montana Hwy 2, 15 miles east of Whitehall or 19 miles west of Three Forks.
Description
This trail leads past the DanMor Historic Gypsum Mine. The entrance to the mine can be viewed from the trail side, however there are metal bars across it to prevent people from entering. There is an interpretive sign that provides historical and geological information of the mine.
The trail itself is not technical, however it is a little steep and pumpy in places if you are ascending on a bike. It can be accessed from above via
Cave Gulch Trail, or from below via the
Limespur Fishing Access Trail. A loop could be made from the Campground using both of these trails and could be ridden in either direction. Although the loop would be technically moderate, both directions would involve some steep sections of climbing.
