Description
This trail was added to the Anaconda Trail system in 2024 by the US Forest Service. It goes up and over a prominent ridge between
Tin Can Gulch on the west and Blue Eyed Nellie Gulch on the east. The highlight of this trail is the great views you get looking out over the Anaconda Valley and south towards the Pintler Mountains which include the very impressive Mt Haggin (10607 ft). Although it passes through some trees on the Tin Can (West) side, the trail for the most part is quite exposed to the elements, so take that into account when planning your ride.
The trail can be ridden in either direction, and has been built very straight, wide and even. This makes it a double edged sword for mountain biking: good for the up, but not so good for the down. For the ascent you'll have consistent gradients and few obstacles to interrupt a carefully calibrated training regiment. The downhill is very fast, and has a considerable lack of variation that would otherwise give it any flow. The easiest and most scenic section of the trail is the middle part where the trail traverses around the upper section of the ridge. It crosses a jeep road at its apex and this can be followed down a little ways to a nice little 'summit'.
