Description
This trail branches off the highpoint of
Iron Mountain Road and continues up the hillside towards the summit of ElkhornPeak. The trail disappears at a saddle on the eastern ridge of Elkhorn Peak, where it is possible to continue to the summit on foot by scrambling through a boulder field.
The first half of the trail is doubletrack and leads you up to a ski club cabin with some nice views. Shortly after passing the cabin, the trail becomes singletrack and becomes even steeper to the point where you'll likely be pushing your bike up sections. It's not super technical, just steep. Off to the side of the trail you'll see evidence of past mining activities such as pits and tailings.
Eventually the trail exits the trees and you can follow your nose across the alpine meadow to some very interesting slickrock-like slabs at a saddle. After taking some photos you have the option of turning around here, or continuing to the summit on foot. The descent back down to
Iron Mountain Road is not too technical and should be easily ridden by anyone who has managed to bring their bike all the way up here.
