Description
Trident is primarily ridden downhill, although the uphill direction does occasionally get attempted from people wanting a real challenge. The trail can be divided into 2 sections: The upper ridge, and the switchbacks into Frying Pan Basin.
Upper ridge:
Comes off the middle of South Motherlode Trail and descends south down a very scenic ridge. Trail is rocky and technical, but not too steep so can be ridden in either direction. Great for an out-and-back if you don't want to commit to the descent into the back valley.
Switchbacks into Frying Pan Basin:
This is where things get steep and serious. Lots of loose rock, techy features and tight switchbacks. The switchbacks at the top are especially spicy. Spits you out at the south end of the valley where you have 3 options to climb back out: the way you came down (hardest),
Boss Tweed (difficult), and Frying Pan Basin Road (Easiest by far).
