Need to Know
The easiest access to the summit trail starts from McClellan Creek Road via McClellan Creek and Montgomery Park Trails. It is an elevation gain of about 3,500ft from the trailhead to the summit, so be prepared for a big day.
Description
As the name implies, Casey Peak trail leads to the summit of Casey Peak, where you'll find an old stone shelter, and great views in all directions. The trail is steep and rocky and only the bottom third is rideable going uphill if you are a strong climber. The rest of the trail is hike-a-bike going up, but assuming the descent is within your capabilities it is definitely worth it. The trail is burly with a lot of loose rock, some of it big and chunky. There are also some interesting corners with tricky rock features.
The top part of the trail has been subjected to a couple of fires over the years and therefore all of the large trees are dead. The upside of this means that you get great views from lower down than you otherwise would.
The stone shelter at the top of the trail is very basic, but is great for getting out of the wind if it is a cold day. There is a summit log book, some basic benches to sit on, and a very small wood burning stove.
