Need to Know
Montgomery Park is a difficult and very scenic trail that travels through a variety of terrains in the North Elkhorn Region. It begins in the north at the Crystal Creek Road Trailhead and finishes in the South at a junction with McClellan Creek Trail. The trail has two sections separated by Casey Meadows trail that are somewhat different.
Description
The Northern Half (from Crystal Creek Road to Casey Meadows Trail)
The first 1.5 miles from Crystal Creek Road consist of moderately steep doubletrack that climbs up through the forest and finally peters out and continues as singletrack at a significant clearing. This is when some of the gradients start to get really tough and you can expect some bike pushing going this way. The trail has a variable surface of rocks, dirt and grass, but the trees become thinner as you head south until you are traversing around the hillside through the grassy slopes of Casey Meadows. The trail joins Casey Meadows Trail briefly as it passes over the creek, and then branches off to the left.
The Southern Half (from Casey Meadows Trail to Mclellan Creek Trail)
The southern part of this trail is more commonly ridden on a mountain bike as it provides access to the
Casey Peak Trail. This section is rocky - some loose and chunky - and has an alpine feel to it, as it traverses up and around the North Flank of
Casey Peak to a scenic high point that looks out over the valley below. On both sides of this high point the trail has some steep and technical sections, but on the McClellan Creek (West) side it is longer and you have the roughest and most technical section of trail. This means riding this from East to West is Easier, but bear in mind that the access to the Eastern side (via the North Montgomery Park or Lower Casey Meadows) is more difficult than to the West (via Lower McClellan Creek), so pick your poison!
