Overview

Johnny of Top is a fun outing for your intermediate to advanced rider looking to step it up from the more cross country style of Johnny Draw. There is an alternative technical exit breaking right during the major downhill that skirts the hillside above the road, ending back at the trailhead.

Description

Some people ride Johnny on Top in the uphill direction, but my preferred way is this loop going up Johnny Draw and down Johnny on Top. The climbing on Johnny Draw is great singletrack up and over a ridge. Once on Johnny Draw, let it rip and enjoy varied surfaces with optional booters. There is one short steep 2-track climb about mid-way.

The last part of the ridge has sandstone steps, small hits with nice landings, and some tight switchbacks. Fast and fun. At the bottom, turn right and cruise out on a doubletrack down to the hwy. At the highway turn right and continue about a mile back to the parking lot.

There is an alternative option to stay on singletrack all the way back to the trailhead, but it involves some advanced technical riding. If you don't mind missing out on the exciting downhill, break right on the trail that skirts the hillside above the road.
