Louis Lake Rd. is typically closed until the first week of June. Snow may not permit riders from accessing the upper sections of this trail until late May.
Overview
This is a classic example of a backcountry Wind River Range ride. This ride skirts the Popo Agie Wilderness Area, climbing through aspen and lodgepole stands, along a number of pristine mountain creeks and descends a beautiful river canyon. It offers something for those seeking a longer, more technical mountain bike ride in the Lander area.
Need to Know
Keep in mind that sections of this ride are remote and cell phone service is not a guarantee. For more info, see the
Middle Fork Trail description. As comments indicate,
Middle Fork Trail can be technical and rough to the point of needing to walk. Consider
Upper Brewers Trail or riding as an out-and-back to Worthen TH.
Description
Beginning in Sinks Canyon Campground, start with a pedally climb on the Brewer's Trail to the upper meadows of
The Catalyst Trail. This trail is all brand new, extremely well-benched, 100% singletrack with some sections reaching above 15% grade. It's a nice reprieve from the climb as you pedal through the non-technical upper meadow sections of
The Catalyst Trail. Top out at the Fossil Hill parking lot (there's a single pit toilet there).
From there, continue across the paved road to join the
Upper Brewers Trail. Ride flowy cross country past Frye Lake to Worthen Meadows Trailhead.
From the Worthen Meadow Trailhead, begin a short but technical, very rocky climb along the
Middle Fork Trail. The descent from Sheep's Bridge to the
Middle Fork Trail is rocky (ranging from gravel to baby heads to refrigerator-sized boulders) and technical, requiring some hike-a-bike sections and/or advanced bike handling skills.
The
Middle Fork Trail to Popo Agie Falls is a popular hiking route. You'll likely meet hikers and possibly dogs on the trail. Please be courteous and yield to uphill traffic. Carrying a bell is not a bad idea as there are a number of high-speed sections on this trail. This loop is best ridden on weekday mornings or evenings.
Just before the
Middle Fork Trail begins to descend into the canyon of the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River, there is the option to take the alternative Stock Connector trail down. The Stock Connector trail is less technical and less popular to hike, making it a good choice if the
Middle Fork Trail is busy. - Description by Tony Ferlisi with improvements made by Justin Bowen.
