Overview
This loop makes a nice ride all on its own or a worthwhile extension to the
Big Park Loop from Bell Rock. Tougher than most of Big Park, it makes the perfect addition or alternative to riders seeking more bang for their buck on this side of Sedona. One of the best parts about it is the lack of crowds throughout most of the ride, along with easy parking at Jack's Canyon trailhead if you choose to start from there. Expect some grunty climbs, moderate tech maneuvers, fun desert flow, and wide open views all along this intermediate loop.
Description
If starting from Jack's Canyon trailhead as mapped here, you'll face a grind of a climb right out of the gate, and it's all uphill for about a mile and a half. The good news is that this is most of the route's elevation gain getting out of the way early. For the most part the climb is not too technical, but those unaccustomed to Sedona punchiness can expect to hop off the bike a few times.
When you finally reach the highpoint, you'll be on the shoulder of a ridge with very satisfying views. Pause to admire the wall of sandstone cliffs across the way, and the impressive look at the
Rabbit Ears formation--a free-standing rock tower also known as Oak Creek Spire.
Next, you'll get to enjoy a long descent with some natural flow and more great views. Courthouse Butte looms large ahead as you carve down some gravelly turns and swoop through small drainages. A full mile of downhill brings you to the junction with
Big Park Loop. Decide here if you want to extend your ride toward Bell Rock or continue on to
Little Rock trail.
Little Rock is a fun, easier intermediate trail that twists through several drainages and short sections of slickrock. It's mostly XC singletrack with good natural flow and short technical features. It's primarily uphill heading eastward, but on rolling terrain with enough variety that you'll hardly notice the elevation gain. Then, once back at the junction with
Rabbit Ears, enjoy a final fast rip down to the road and the parking area.
