Overview
This is a great beginner cross-country loop with respectable mileage, moderate climbs, and many sections of fun forest flow. It connects two local favorite trail systems south of Flagstaff in one ride.
Description
Starting at Fort Tuthill, this loop will take you around on the well-known
Soldier's Trail and then connect to the newer Rogers Lake
Connector Trail. The Rogers Lake trail continues out on rolling terrain through ponderosa forest and then climbs up the side of Woody Mountain. On the return leg, the descent down the east face of Woody Mountain is a highlight of this route. After cresting Woody Mountain, this route goes down to connect with
Gold Digger. This is a fun loop passing by the edge of Rogers Lake (often dry). Take a side trip to cross the dirt road and view the lake from overlook if you've never been here before. When returning to Fort Tuthill, consider taking the south branch of Soldiers trail back to the parking lot (as mapped here) to complete the loop.
