Overview

A great loop that gives you the full experience of climbing and descending Mount Elden on the fun and challenging Sunset Trail.

Description

From the Oldham Basin Trailhead, climb Elden Lookout Road until you top out just over 9000 feet (Oldham is an alternative to climb on singletrack, but the road is most efficient). From here, you'll get on the Sunset Trail and head north traversing the ridge that connects Mount Elden to Dry Lake Hills. The first section of Sunset Has stunning views and drops into old-growth forests before connecting to the famous "catwalk section" and the junction with Heart Trail. After Heart Trail, the most technical section of the route, known as Hobbit Forest, will provide some fun and engaging challenges. After a climb up and over Dry Lake Hills ridge and the junction with Swell and Broadside, the Sunset Trail descends through thick forest with very fast flowy sections back to Schultz Pass. To complete the loop from Schultz Pass, climb Broadside into Dry Lake Hills and descend Lower Brookbank back to the trailhead.
