Overview
Passage 31 of the Arizona Trail, from Marshall Lake to Walnut Canyon, make a varied journey through steep drainages and along canyon rims. Thanks to recent trail work, most of this passage is now undulating singletrack, though it crosses several forest roads along its length. Near Fisher Point, Passage 33 diverges to Flagstaff for resupply and lodging opportunities.
Need to Know
There are two reliable water sources on this passage at wildlife water tanks, though the water might not be inviting to drink. There is also potable water at Walnut Canyon National Monument, a short detour along a paved road.
Description
Starting on Anderson Mesa at Marshall Lake, this section of the AZT drops steeply down into a valley and reaches the head of Walnut Canyon. A steep and very rocky, but relatively short climb leads up above Fisher Point. Don't miss the short detour for the view at the edge.
From there, twisting singletrack runs alongside Walnut Canyon, but typically out of view of the rim. Some short detours can lead to additional vistas. The passage ends at a frontage road close to Cosnino Road exit on I-40, and Passage 32 continues form there. No public parking available at this spot.
History & Background
Another very worthwhile detour is a quick jaunt southward on Walnut Canyon Road to see the national monument. This is where the Sinagua people built a village of cliff dwellings nearly 1000 years ago. A 1-mile hike is all that's required to see some very impressive ruins, and the visitor center has numerous artifacts on display.
