Need to Know
Be sure to reserve your entrance to Horizontes at least a day in advance at
reservaciones.acguanacaste.…. There is an entrance fee. There are no sources of water along the route so bring plenty. Although much of the route is shaded, don't forget to put on sunblock to protect exposed skin from the tropical sun.
Description
This route is simple to follow with just four turns. Start from the reception area and head northeast on the dirt road past the farm buildings and soccer field. Soon the road enters forest with a long flat section. After 4 km, take a left at the signed intersection. The next section has several short up and down sections while bording the adjacent farm (Hacienda El Jobo, private property). At 5.8 km, turn left at the T-intersection onto a well used, flat dirt road that will take you back to the start. Note the sharp left turn at 10 km and the righthand turn at 11.3 km onto the road you started out on.
History & Background
This site is part of Área de Conservación Guanacaste, a vast landscape protecting forest and marine habitats. The 7,000 hectare Horizontes ranch was donated to ACG in 1989. Although the farm was mostly pasture when donated, it has now regenerated into a biodiverse dry forest rich with wildlife. As an experimental research station, Horizontes has been the site of over 100 scientific studies on the dynamics of tropical dry forests.
