Description
The
Inner Loop,
Outer Loop, and the Out & Back are collectively the "Foote Road Trails." This county land is administered by the Erie County Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. It's technically not part of Sprague Brook Park, but rather part of its forestry holdings.
All the Foote Road trails are accessed from a connector from the XC Ski Loop, crossing Foote Road. Be sure to look both ways for traffic.
The Out & Back trail starts from the inner loop. This trail is a way to access the rest of this forestry parcel to the east. However, because of a wetland along the south part of the parcel, a full loop was not possible, but instead, a "lollipop" loop was built.
The trail is mostly through a spruce stand and is thus very rooty. It starts with a gradual climb along a small ridge. At the top, some gratuitous snaking turns are thrown in just for fun. It crosses a boardwalk along a wet section as it parallels Foote Road and soon hits the "lollipop" junction. The best option is to go left rather the straight. This starts out as a climb passing through some interesting woods and an old ruined foundation.
Just about when you reach the end of the forestry parcel, the trail descends to the right, following a deep stream bed, before it double back to the right to join the trail for the ride back. On the way back, continue taking the alternate segment you'll see on your right.
