Overview

A loop around the ski area with moderate climbs, some great berms, and fast descents on cool alpine singletrack. You get views all the way to Sawtooths and down into Boise. The ride tours a variety of mountain environments and takes you by all of your favorite ski runs. It's the perfect XC ride when everything in the valley is too hot. There are also ample stream crossings from clear springs, ideal for bringing the dogs along, too!

Need to Know

Around The Mountain Trail is designated for counter-clockwise travel only. It is well marked and connects to many other trails, so you can devise different loop options as well.

Description

The ride starts in the main parking lot near the Simplot Lodge. From the lot you'll start climbing on the Deer Point trail. Look for the start of the trail right under the Deer Point Lift. The grades are all mellow on the Deer Point Trail and there is ample shade and water along the trail. The Deer Point trail will then connect into the Around the Mountain Trail.

Turn right on the Around the Mountain trail and traverse across the face of the Mountain. There are some great views as you work your way up a couple switchbacks before traversing over to the intersection with the ridge road. You'll then cross the ridge road once and then twice as you work your way around to the backside. After the second road crossing, the trail starts a gradual descent followed by some nice bermed corners.

Once on the backside you'll look out towards Idaho City and the Sawtooths. It's rolling terrain on mostly smooth trails, but with some techy sections, rock slabs, and small stream crossings thrown in. You'll cross a couple of ski runs and under the Pine Creek Lift, in a mix of sun and shade between meadows and woods.

Once Mores Mountain comes into view you'll start climbing again as you work you way under Superior chairlift. Views are abundant here from the open slopes, and the trail is pretty smooth. There is one more short descent before the trail joins a dirt road and starts to climb.

You can dive off of this doubltrack on Sunday Stroll and the new Around The Mountain Extension, which dips through Bitterrroot Basin on twisty singletrack. This is a really fun way to add a few miles, but if you've had enough you can continue to Pioneer Lodge and take the easy way down Sunshine Trail to the bottom.

After climbing out of the Bitterroot bowl, the ATM extension feeds into New to This, which rolls on down to meet the road at Frontier Point Lodge. This makes the end of the trail, and from there it's a short coast down the road to the base area parking.

The trail was completed in 2013 with generous support from SWIMBA, Bogus Basin, Ridge to Rivers, and the Boise National Forest!
