Family Friendly This trail is popular with local families visiting the area. The lake offers fishing, views, and easily accessed spots to hang out and enjoy the mountains without travelling far from the trailhead.

This trail is usually snowpacked from mid-October until late May. Well marked private property borders the lower reaches of the trail.

Description

From the intersection with State Road 38 in Red River, drive 6 miles up 578 to where the pavement ends at a junction of the Middle Fork Road (FR 58) on the right and 58A to the left across a bridge. Either park here and ride, or drive 1.1 miles up the Middle Fork road to a parking area.

From the parking area the first 1/4 mile follows a Public right of way across private property, there's a gate and the entrance for bikes and hikers is to the left. Ride up the dirt to a fork where there's a gated property on the right, stay on the trail to the left and cross the Red River on the bridge or ride across the creek during low flows. For the next mile ride up this trail (old jeep road) as it climbs up the mountainside on the east side of the creek. You'll come to a trail junction just before a shallow river crossing, Lost Lake Trail #91 begins here on the left and the Middle Fork Trail continues to the right across the river. Continue up this trail as it switches back several times leading to Middle Fork Lake.

Middle Fork and Lost Lake trailhead. The first couple hundred feet crosses a public right of way across private property, don't be deterred by the gate ~ there is an entrance on the left for bikes and hikers.

Very tricky, but worth the view.

Rewarding ride. Worth the effort on the ascent. Be prepared to walk your bike in certain sections. The alpine lake is magical.
